November is a very busy month in
the traditional church year. We begin
with All Saints’ Day; then a few weeks later we celebrate the national holiday
of Thanksgiving and this year we begin a new church year with the first Sunday
of Advent on Nov. 29.
All Saints’ Day is actually the reason for
the very secularized holiday of Halloween.
As you may know Halloween is short for All Hallows Evening, which became
All Hallows E’en, which became just Hallowe’en. So Halloween is really the Eve of the church celebration of All
Saints (Hallows / Holy ones) Day. All
Saints’ Day is the day that we remember our loved ones who in the last year
have finished their journey through this life on earth as members of the Church
Militant and have gone on to glory in heaven as members of the Church
Triumphant. We miss them greatly and
our hearts ache to see them and hug them one more time. Dr. Ken Haugk, the founder of Stephen
Ministries, has prepared a series of 4 booklets entitled “Journeying through
Grief” to comfort, support, strengthen, and encourage people who have lost a
loved one. If you feel that you could
use some help, please contact Pastor Fred or Brenda Johnson, one of our Stephen
Ministers.
I don’t want to minimize the pain
we feel, but as a matter of faith we wouldn’t ask our loved ones to leave the
eternal bliss of heaven to return to earth and the troubles of this life. As St. John wrote in his vision of the
throne of heaven, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation;
they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”
(Rev. 7:14) In spite of our sorrow, by
faith we can celebrate that our loved ones have crossed the finish line and are
safely in heaven with our Lord Jesus; and we look forward to a blessed reunion
with them when God calls us home.
Until then you and I are called to
press on in the Church Militant; to “fight the good fight” as disciples of
Jesus, members of His Church that is still engaged in mortal combat with the
evil one. We know how that spiritual
war ends: “After this I looked, and behold a great multitude that no one could
number from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing
before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm
branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs
to our God who sits upon the throne and to the Lamb!” (Rev. 7:9-10)
But here on earth at 38th and
State in Erie, or at 80 Third Ave. in Albion, the spiritual battles continue
for each soul who is conceived into this life.
Our mission is to rescue as many people as we can from the fires of hell
and add them to that “great multitude” in heaven by “making disciples” of
them. The more this world changes, the
more creative we have to be to get the unchanging message of salvation to be
heard by people who don’t know that they need Jesus. We can invite them to come to church, but more and more we’ll
need to find ways to take the Gospel out into the neighborhoods where they live
and work and play. Have you made an
Ablaze! contact recently?
See you in church! Bring a friend!

All are welcome to begin their day of worship in this study led by Millis Parshall.
As our own Rite of Remembrance of those loved ones who in the last year (Thanksgiving to Thanksgiving) have died in the Lord and passed on to heavenly glory, on November 22 we include a candle-lighting rite in our worship services.
If
you have any loved ones that you wish for us to include in this ceremony,
please submit to the church office or to Pastor Poeppel the loved one’s
full name, relation to you, age at time of death, and date of death by
November 15. Thank you.
Very shortly we will begin taking orders for
poinsettias. We don’t know the actual

Please watch the weekly announcements
for the date and time that Council selects to decorate the

up Monday evening and baked goods may be brought in to the church, Monday, November

plastic wrap or bags, the contents clearly marked including a suggested

Many thanks to Art
Anderson, Laurie Hinds, Judy Leretsis, Pastor Poeppel, Sam, Sharon and Ben
Steiner, as well as Tyco Swick, for helping deliver invitations to homes
in Glenwood Heights regarding an informational meeting to be held at Trinity.
We had 14 neighbors attend the
meeting on October 22, which according to the Neighborhood Watch
Council is an excellent response, and all that attended were very
interested in pursuing the program.
They even had an individual that was unable
to attend the meeting make their interest in serving as coordinator of the
Neighborhood Watch Group known by means of a neighbor that did attend!
At this point everything is in the
hands of the Neighborhood Watch Council, but we feel very positive that the
Lord has blessed our efforts and we look forward to what comes next!

Our Stephen Ministers have purchased a number of booklets on “Journeying
through Grief” to comfort, support, strengthen, and encourage people who
have lost a loved one.
If you have lost a loved one recently and feel that you could use some
help, please contact Pastor Poeppel or Brenda Johnson, one of our Stephen
Ministers.
The Stephen Ministry will meet again at 12:30 pm on Sunday, November 15.
Let’s be Ablaze for Sharing the Gospel of
Jesus Christ! That’s the
theme for many of our church body’s efforts this decade. Many people need to know the love and care
of our Lord Jesus Christ! We all
respond to the Gospel in a variety of ways.
Our responses can be in any of the identified ways, as on our banner at
church - LEARN, PRAY, GIVE, TELL, SEND, GO, and CELEBRATE.
Consider being involved in some manner with sharing
the Gospel with another person. We are
keeping a tally to join in with our national and international partners. You can add your witness events to the
total by filling out the orange cards available and submitting them to the box
in the church – signed or unsigned.
Ablaze
update:
International
Goal: 100,000,000
Latest tally: 10,479,610 (as of 10/22/2009)
Trinity’s
Goal: 4,400
Latest tally: 190 (as of 6/26/2009)
Fan

$51,035,829 (as of 10/23/2009)
FYI, of all the
memorials received for Pastor Sallach, the monies designated for Fan into Flame
totaled $3,350! What a marvelous
tribute to him! Praise God!
Here is a recent story from the website:
Sharing the Good News on Friendship Sunday
in Georgia
Members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens, Ga.,
held a Friendship Sunday to reach out to visitors with the Gospel.
10/20/2009
Our Friendship Sunday at Trinity Lutheran
Church was a big success this year. We had at least 27 non-regular visitors in addition
to some regular visitors and 18 in a baptismal party. I cannot see the hearts
of all of the non-regular visitors, but giving a conservative estimate, about
half of those visitors were unreached or uncommitted. I pray that many of these
visitors will come back to Trinity and enter into a saving relationship with
Jesus Christ. I attribute much of the success of this year's Friendship Sunday
to a dedicated and coordinated prayer effort.
During the LWML’s 33rd national biennial convention
in Portland, OR, the women of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League voted
to support six LCMS World Mission projects in Peru, Tanzania, Korea,
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, and Lithuania.
We are grateful for their partnership.
We are also thankful for:
·
The more
than 1,000 attendees who visited our exhibit to sign up for a chance to win
a mission trip to Poland, learn more about short-term missionary service, or
speak with staff and LCMS missionaries.
·
Allowing Dr.
Thomas Zehnder, executive director; Michelle Hoeppner, Asia; and Danelle
Putnam, Dominican Republic, to address your assembly.
What a blessing this partnership is for the
sake of reaching the lost. To God by
the glory!
Please join us on Thursday, November 26 at 10:00 am for
our Service of Praise and Thanksgiving.

The Church Council has entered into another one-year lease
agreement with the Veterans Administration Medical Center across the street
from the Church for the use of parking spaces. As it has been for the past year, during the business days of the
week, Monday to Friday, some of their employees may be parking in our spaces
during normal business hours (daytime).
During those same days some of their official vehicles may be parked at
the church 24 hours. The lot will be
solely used by the church on the weekends.
Please watch for any parking restrictions during the week.
As mentioned earlier in the
newsletter, the Stephen Ministry has available booklets on “Journeying through
Grief” but if you are having a different personal challenge of faith or a
crisis in life that you would appreciate having a Christian caregiver to walk
with you through the experience, Stephen Ministry provides such.
Trained caregivers for men and women meet regularly
at church to help one another confidentially to assist others in need of a
“friend.” Stephen Ministers generally
contact you once a week for perhaps an hour to listen, to talk, and to provide
some spiritual encouragement. If you
would be interested in receiving a Stephen Minister, please contact Pastor
Poeppel.
Don’t forget … all adults attending Trinity are
encouraged to join us for a Christmas Luncheon on Thursday, December
10 at Ricardo’s at 12:00 noon!!
Reservations will be required to
allow the proper number of tables to be reserved so watch the bulletin boards
for signup sheets that will be posted soon.
Deadline for signing up is Sunday,
December 6.
Join us as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, our Savior and
Lord!
