In case you weren’t able to get to
church on Sunday, September 27, the blue insert in the bulletins included two
very important announcements.
One side announced plans for
a great celebration. On Sunday, October
11, following the morning service, the Ladies Aid Society will host a catered
dinner to celebrate 129 years of God’s grace and blessing for our congregation. What a great thing to celebrate and what a
great opportunity to share some good food and fellowship with members of our
church family! If I could be so bold,
I’d like to make a suggestion. Outreach minded churches are always looking for
opportunities to invite others into their fellowship. So, I would encourage you not to just look at your calendar to
see if you’re free that Sunday, but think about whom you know that you could
invite to join you. Bring a
friend. Maybe even buy a ticket for
them. And if you really want to do them
a favor, invite them to dinner after they join you for church. Maybe invite a whole family. I’m getting carried away. Just a thought.
The other side of that blue
bulletin insert described a different kind of outreach opportunity. “Trinity’s Church Council has approved
facilitating the formation of a Neighborhood Watch group in the “Glenwood
Heights” neighborhood.” The insert goes
on to say that, “We have been in the neighborhood since our relocation from
11th Street, but never really a part of the neighborhood.” Those aren’t my words, but I’m afraid I have
to agree. It’s not that I’m so smart or
that I’ve done much better. But that
statement is probably true for 90% of the churches in this country.
One of the books I’ve been reading
as part of a learning group of pastors participating in the LCMS church
revitalization effort is “Breaking the Missional Code” by Ed Stetzer and David
Putnam. The subtitle of the book
encourages us to see that “Your Church Can Become a Missionary in Your
Community.” The book endeavors to show
us how to do that by describing what overseas missionaries have done for
centuries when they first arrive in a new mission field. The back cover jacket states, “Breaking the
Missional Code …is a clarion call for churches in the United States to act
among their local communities as missionaries would in a foreign land. For in fact, the message of Jesus Christ is
still foreign to many who stand in the shadows of American steeples. As our approach to outreach changes, so can
countless lives in our own backyards.”
That’s what we’re here for
isn’t it? …to change lives with the message of Jesus Christ! The first step is
to get to know the people where you live.
That’s why we’re trying to help our neighbors set up a Neighborhood
Watch Group. As the insert said, “This
is our opportunity to reach out to establish relationships with our
neighbors.” It’s a good first step at
least. How can you help?

CHURCH COUNCIL AND VOTERS
The Church Council of
Trinity has started to look at the guidelines that need to be followed
in order to put together a Call Committee as well as the work that this
committee performs in the call process.
In late October, Council plans to make a formal
announcement for the formation of a Call Committee.
In addition, Church Council, as
part of the initial call process, is working on a “Congregation Self Study.” Anyone in the congregation who would like
to finish an abbreviated version of the study can request a copy from Mark May.
You can return the study anonymously and your comments will be compiled
with all other submissions. All input is welcome.
The Council is also looking for input from groups such as: Trinity Seniors, Ladies Aid Society, Choir,
LWML, staff members, etc.

Shawl Ministry meeting will be held on Saturday, October 24 at 11:00 am

The Adult Bible Study meets
at 10:15 am every Sunday morning as they continue reading the “Law and
Gospel” study series. The group sends a
hearty welcome to Kristen Marincic, a Mercyhurst College student, that has
joined them Sunday mornings!
All are welcome to begin their day of
worship in this study led by Millis Parshall.
Trinity Seniors
will meet on Wednesday, October 14, at 12:00 pm at church.

We continue to have between 10 and 12 ladies in attendance on
the second Thursday of the month. We
need fresh ideas and new faces – won’t you consider joining us for this month’s
meeting!?
A wonderful dice game called “Bunco” entertained us for a
while after our September meeting.

Thursday, October 8 sees us bringing our bag
lunch to the 12:15 pm meeting.
THIS IS A CHANGE OF TIME! The
Executive Board will meet at 12:00 Noon to discuss any issues to bring before
the group.
The hostess, Nancy
Rusnak, will bring a light dessert to share with the group and will serve the
beverage. Devotions will be led
by Lois Gressley.
At this meeting we hope to have the names of students
away from home at College, (who are listed as members and friends of
Trinity Lutheran.) We will take up a
collection to buy Gift Cards that will be sent to them on behalf of Ladies Aid
mission to encourage friendships and to aid those attending Trinity Lutheran
Church. Set up of the tables for
the planned Anniversary Dinner will be the day’s activity.

Be sure to make your donation of $5 per person to
attend the ANNIVERSARY DINNER on Sunday, October 11 after the
morning service! A table in the Narthex
is set up after each worship service to register and reserve your spot for the dinner. Please do not delay, the last day to make
your reservation is Sunday, October 4!
A list of those willing to help clean up is
being generated, please be generous and volunteer your time after the
dinner. See Joann or Trudy if you
are willing to help!

A chair for the Bereavement crew is being sought out
currently; Karlynn has stepped down after many years of service. The luncheon has also been re-vamped to
allow the kitchen crew to be on their feet less and cut down use of the ovens.
Requests for a Bereavement meal go through Trudy or our
current President (Nancy Rusnak.)
If you are interested in serving as chair of the Bereavement
crew, please contact Nancy Rusnak.

If you donate baked goods for our upcoming Election
Day Bake Sale on November 3, please put a suggested price on them. Those who work do not always have the time
to do so before patrons come. Your
cooperation in proffering your time and talents are greatly appreciated!
More names are needed to fill out the work schedule that day; some of
our regulars are out of town that day!!

Speaking of Elections, it is time again to consider an
office within Ladies Aid. Please
prayerfully consider joining the team in your willingness according to God’s
plan. Speak to Him about it in your
daily prayers and let His Spirit guide you!

And don’t forget, the Ladies Aid is still
collecting small to medium sized boxes that bracelets, earrings etc. sometimes
come in. We are unable to use
cardboard boxes, but rather the boxes that are usually hinged, and are
fabric (velveteen) covered. A
collection box with a display of the types of boxes we need is on a table in
the narthex. Thank you for your
assistance.
LWML
Sunday will be celebrated in the morning service on October 4
at Trinity. Our ladies will host a coffee
hour following the morning service and will also have a bake sale for
missions that day. This year’s
theme is “Look to the Hills – God Reigns.”
Our next Trinity LWML
meeting will be held on Thursday, October 15 at 12:00 noon at
the church.
The Lutheran
Women’s Missionary League asks you to pray for missions every Monday at
noon. No matter where you are,
please take a moment to pray for missions work around the world, for missionary
families, for financial support of outreach through our church body and any other
work of the LWML. Remember to pray
especially for our missionaries, the Esala’s. Thank you.
Trinity’s Church Council has
approved facilitating the formation of a Neighborhood Watch in the “Glenwood
Heights” neighborhood.
This is the area from West 38th
Street north to Norman Way, and from the west side of State Street to Glenwood
Park Boulevard.
There are 182 homes in this
area. We have been in the neighborhood
since our relocation from 11th Street, but never really part of the
neighborhood. This is our opportunity
to reach out to establish relationships with our neighbors.
In order to do this, on Saturday,
October 17, we will be distributing fliers, door-to-door, in the
neighborhood, inviting the residents to attend a Neighborhood Watch
organizational meeting at our Church on Thursday, October 22 at 7:00 PM.
Distribution volunteers will meet
at our Church at 9:00 AM on October 17 for instructions and street
assignments.
Heidi Miles Wertz, Director of
Erie Neighborhood Watch, will instruct us in the process. After this information session, volunteers
will distribute fliers.
It should not take a total
combined manpower effort of more than 20 hours to accomplish our flier
distribution. So, if only ten Trinity
members participate, we should be home for lunch.
The more that help, the quicker we
will be done!

approximately six hours per week. This
is a paid position. We prefer a member
of Trinity or alternatively someone that a Trinity member knows and
trusts. Hours are flexible but at least
some work should be done on Saturdays.

Let’s be Ablaze for Sharing the Gospel of
Jesus Christ! That’s the
theme for many of our church body’s efforts this decade. Many people need to know the love and care
of our Lord Jesus Christ! We all respond
to the Gospel in a variety of ways. Our
responses can be in any of the identified ways, as on our banner at church - LEARN,
PRAY, GIVE, TELL, SEND, GO, and CELEBRATE.
Consider being involved in some manner with sharing
the Gospel with another person. We are
keeping a tally to join in with our national and international partners. You can add your witness events to the
total by filling out the orange cards available and submitting them to the box
in the church – signed or unsigned.

And that can mean a lot of different things to each
and every one of us. But one thing is for
sure; holidays can be an extremely tough time for those of us that have lost a
loved one in the last 12 months or so.
So I’d like to share with you that “Preparing
for the Holidays” is the topic of the November 5 bereavement
discussion group at Great Lakes Hospice, 1700 Peach Street. The meeting begins at 5:30 pm and
ends at approximately 7:00 pm.
You don’t have to join the group and there is no
cost to attend; they just appreciate a phone call to let them know you are
coming so they can set up enough seats and provide enough refreshments. If you are interested in attending or would
like additional information, their phone number is 877-6120.
I am including this in the newsletter because I
already know that the holidays are going to be difficult for me … and I suspect
that they might be difficult for others as well … not for all the same reasons
that I have … but perhaps at least one.
As some of you know, I lost my brother to melanoma
cancer in July of this year; and as all of you know, we lost our beloved Pastor
Sallach in December of last year.
While this may not technically be the “first
Christmas” since Pastor’s death, it is possible that it might “feel like” the
first one for many of us because of when Pastor Sallach died. With his death on December 20 and his
funeral on December 27, last year’s Christmas is pretty much a blur … and
perhaps for more than just me!
Anyway, I am planning to attend this session and if
