FROM THE PASTOR

Summer is a time to kick back and relax a bit, unless you own a farm (or a landscaping business).  There’s always work to be done on a farm, but with the warm weather, even farmers need to take a break when they’re not making hay.  Of course school is out, so the kids are home.  That’s one reason that lots of people like to go away for a while.  Some like to travel, and see the country.  Some like to go up to the mountains for a week or two.  Others prefer to go to the beach for their getaway.  Lots of people like to get away for a while.  If you’ve tried to get somewhere with the construction on I-79 lately, you know that’s true.

A few years ago when I was still working in the business world, a major credit card company based their advertising campaign on the slogan, “Don’t leave home without it!”  In other words, if you’re out traveling, you don’t want to carry around a lot of cash, but you don’t want to get stuck somewhere without your credit card, either.

Now that I’m a pastor, I notice that the pews aren’t quite as full during the summer months.  But do we really want to take a vacation from God?  I hope not!  Of course, you could argue that God is everywhere, and you’d be right.  But God’s Word also tells us, “Let us not stop meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing.”  God wants us to gather together to worship Him, to learn from His Word, and to support and encourage each other in the faith.  That’s why we go to church.  So during the summer, when we’re traveling or just taking it easy at home, maybe our slogan should be, “God, don’t leave home without Him.”

Here are a few practical suggestions to help you stay close to God on vacation:

1.   If you know where you’re going to be next Sunday, find a sister congregation in the LCMS annual church directory (hardcopy in Louise’s office or online at lcms.org, click on directories).

2.   Find a church to visit in the phone book or a listing in the hotel lobby.  Most churches these days will welcome vacationers to “come as you are.”  You might even pick up some good ideas to bring home with you.

3.   Some campgrounds have non-denominational services on site.  Be careful that the message squares with God’s Word.

4.   “Don’t leave home without your Bible.”  It’s good for daily devotional reading, and if you just can’t get to a church on Sunday morning, you can worship together as a family.

5.   While you’re away, don’t forget that the financial needs of your home church don’t stop because you’re not there.  Consider giving your tithe or offering before you leave, mail it, or catch up when you get home.

This summer, “Don’t leave home without Him.” See you in church!  Bring a friend!

TRINITY LUTHERAN THRIVENT GROUP

·         Sincerest thanks to everyone who helped with our Thrivent Builds program.  We are most grateful to all the volunteers especially those who donated food for the meals we provided on the Mondays:  Karlynn and Eugene Bernhard, Bev and Dick Irish, Trudy Sallach, Joann Kaufer, Luanne May, Carol Schneider, Dot Smith, Pat Dougan, Joyce Baird, and Edie Neidinger.  God bless you all for being such a blessing to others.

·         A few members of Trinity went to the dedication of the Thrivent Builds house.  They reported that 44 local churches were involved in the building process and that the dedication ceremony was beautiful.  Everyone at the dedication rejoiced and gave thanks to God for his many blessings!

The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League asks you to pray for missions every Monday at noon.  No matter where you are, please take a moment to pray for missions work around the world, for missionary families, for financial support of outreach through our church body and any other work of the LWML.  Remember to pray especially for our missionaries, the Esala’s.  Thank you.

Dorcas is on break for the summer … but please continue to save your cancelled stamps!  You can place them in the box at the top of the State Street entrance.

LADIES AID SOCIETY

·         Many thanks to those who supported the May Election Bake Sale … it brought in $129.  The project the ladies have decided to work on next is helping the Church Council to pay for a solution to the presence of water through the basement wall.  Be generous and it may get done before the rainy season comes again!

·         Our Hat Party in May was truly a hoot!  Winners were:
    Funniest:  Edie Neidinger
    Cleverest:  Trudy Sallach
    Prettiest:  Luanne May

Others had an Olympic hat, a fresh floral, a vintage netted style, silk flowers and Decolores cap.  Our President generated a very funny story that required participation.  You missed a grand time!

·         In June, we had a great time doing a service project involving crafts.  And many thanks to the workers for the June 7 Ladies Aid Coffee Hour.  We hope that those that came before the worship service had a good time of fellowship with others at Trinity.

·         On Thursday, July 9, please make plans to join us for a picnic at Mark and Luanne May’s house.  We’ll gather at 5:30 pm and eat shortly thereafter!  The address is 9283 West Law Road, North East – between Mooreheadville Road and Brickyard Road.  All attending Trinity are welcome to come, but we must know in advance – please watch for the signup sheet on the bulletin board!  Children are also welcome but they must be carefully watched, as there are water features, creatures and electric fencing on the property!

·         On August 13, we will attempt to put together School Kits, as a service project, this year.  Should you see a good sale, pick up some items to donate.

·         Ladies Aid is still collecting small to medium sized boxes that bracelets, earrings etc. sometimes come in.  We are unable to use cardboard boxes, but rather the boxes that are usually hinged, and are fabric (velveteen) covered.  A collection box with a display of the types of boxes we need is on a table in the narthex.  Thank you for your assistance.

·         After church dinners, please offer your assistance in the clean up of the social hall and kitchen.  A few tend to do all the work and help would be most appreciated!

·         If you would like to borrow anything from the church social hall, such as chairs, tables, kitchen pans, etc., you must check with Nancy Rusnak, Ladies Aid President, first!  If she is not available, please contact our Head Trustee, Sam Steiner.  (Please note that the newer white tables cannot leave the building!!)

·         God be with you all and grant you safety in your travel!  Especially now that the children are out of school.

ABLAZE … The Lutheran Church sharing the Gospel

Let’s be Ablaze for Sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ!  That’s the theme for many of our church body’s efforts this decade.  Many people need to know the love and care of our Lord Jesus Christ!  We all respond to the Gospel in a variety of ways.  Our responses can be in any of the identified ways, as on our banner at church - LEARN, PRAY, GIVE, TELL, SEND, GO, and CELEBRATE.

Consider being involved in some manner with sharing the Gospel with another person.  We are keeping a tally to join in with our national and international partners.  You can add your witness events to the total by filling out the orange cards available and submitting them to the box in the church – signed or unsigned.

ABLAZE UPDATE:

      International Goal -   100,000,000         Latest tally -   10,427,336 (as of 6/26/2009)

      Trinity’s Goal -                     4,400         Latest tally -               190 (as of 6/26/2009)

For information about the movement, go to our church body’s website – www.lcms.org

Here is a recent story from our very own congregation!

Four names were submitted to the Seminary as possible candidates

After first discussing the idea with Zack George, Terry Lawrence, Nathan Sallach and Thomas Sallach, Trudy Sallach called and spoke with Joel Fritsche, Director of Recruitment, at the Concordia Seminary in St. Louis.

She told him that each of the individuals were interested in receiving information about the seminary and Joel was delighted!  Information has already been sent to them and all four are looking it over!

Please pray that one or more of these individuals – or others in the congregation – are led by the Holy Spirit to pursue the ministry!  Praise God!

Ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone?

What if we … carried it with us in our purses or pockets?

What if we … flipped through it several times a day?

What if we … went back to get it if we forgot it?

What if we … used it to receive messages from the text?

What if we … treated it like we couldn't live without it?

What if we … gave it to kids as gifts?

What if we … used it when we traveled?

What if we … used it in case of an emergency?

And unlike our cell phone … we don’t have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill in full!

To maintain a certain level of sanity ...

At lunchtime, sit in your parked car with sunglasses on and point a hair dryer at passing cars.  See if they slow down.

Every time someone asks you to do something, ask if they want fries with that.

Put decaf in the coffee maker at work for three weeks.  Once everyone has gotten over their caffeine addictions, switch to Espresso.

Skip down the hall rather than walk and see how many looks you get.

Order a diet water whenever you go out to eat … with a serious face.

Specify that your drive-through order is “to go”.

When the money comes out the ATM, scream “I won! I won!”

When leaving the zoo, start running toward the parking lot and yell “Run for your lives! They’re loose!”
